Being a parent, I can tell you that I would do this for my son if he asked if there was any way that we could afford the part that insurance might not cover. If your family has good health insurance, you want to make sure that you get this done before you turn 18 and aren't covered any more. There also may be psychological requirements that will have to be met before they'll cover it, so you'd better get busy with this. If you have a relative that could break the ice with them, go that route. Maybe a brother or sister? A cousin or uncle? There must be someone who can get the conversation started. I was very close to my son at that age and am a bit surprised to hear that you can't talk to your mom about this. If nothing else, write them a letter and hand it to them in person. I hope that they don't make light of this as I know this can be a huge problem for someone like you. I have to let you know though, one of my brothers has this problem and I've never even overheard anyone say anything about it. It's just a non-issue to him.
